What is the CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)?
CPC certification is something that many LGV or PCV drivers might not know about as it’s a new qualification recently implemented and enforced by a European Union directive.
The reasoning behind it is to make sure only those who are highly skilled can drive heavy-goods vehicles and so increase safety in the industry and on the roads. Professional drivers enhance their skills and maintain them at their highest levels at all times by taking training courses and assessments every five years.
Is it optional?
No, the qualification is mandatory. Driving an LGV without completing your 35 hours training after September 2014 will incur a fine of up to £1,000 for driver and employer. It is estimated that almost 75% of drivers have outstanding hours to complete before the deadline.
