COURSE INFORMATION

This course provides the underpinning knowledge enabling Environmental Duties in the workplace to be undertaken more effectively. Relevant for managers, supervisors and employee representatives and other duty holders with responsibility for environmental issues in the workplace. This comprehensive course gives an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of Environmental Management and is a valuable addition to the NEBOSH National or International General Certificate.

The qualification comprises of two separately assessed units:

  • Management and Control of Environmental Hazards (EC1)
  • Environmental Practical Application (EC2)

Unit EC1 is a taught unit, assessed by one two-hour written examination. Each written examination consists of ten 'short answer' questions and one 'long answer' question. All questions are compulsory. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

  • Foundations in Environmental Management
  • Environmental Management Systems
  • Environmental Impact Assessments
  • Control of Emissions to Air
  • Control of Contamination of Water Recourses
  • Control of Waste and Land Use
  • Sources and use of Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Control of Environmental Noise
  • Planning for and Dealing with Environmental Emergencies

Unit EC2 is assessed by a practical inspection report undertaken in the candidates own workplace which should take approximately 3 hours and must be presented to the course provider within 14 days of a written examination. The practical examination is internally assessed and externally moderated by NEBOSH.

The course is currently offered on a day-release or block release basis.

Day Release: One day a week over a period of seven weeks

Block Release: Five days attendance over a one week period.

Exams: The exam is held on a day out with the classroom days. Examinations are held at the course providers premises, the practical element is carried out by the student at their own work premises.

The examinations are held 4 times per year in March, June, September and December.

Support is provided throughout the course in assessment, study and examination techniques.

There are no entry requirements to entry although candidates are required to write a short report, requiring a degree of written communication skills.

The NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate is relevant to managers, supervisors and employee representatives with environmental safety and/or environment risk assessment responsibilities. For those seeking a promoted post or a career in environmental safety this qualification is widely regarded as the starting point.
