COURSE INFORMATION

Successful completion of the course will enable you to seek employment and register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) at Support Worker level. Visit the Scottish Social Services Council for more information about registration requirements.

Topics relevant to working with children and young people, including:

  • Child Protection
  • Legislation
  • Theoretical Approaches
  • Observations
  • Child Development
  • Play Opportunities
  • Safe Working Practices

In addition you will learn how to become a Reflective Practitioner.

This qualification is achieved through continual assessment.

One Year Full-time

You will spend two days per week in College (underpinning knowledge) and three days per week in relevant workplace settings to gain practical experience in order to observe and gather evidence for portfolio development.

Flexible Delivery (to be completed in 6 - 9 months)

You must be employed or working in a voluntary capacity as a support worker for children and young people, for a minimum of 12 hours per week.

External Candidates

  • Four Standard Grades including English at 2 or above, or Four Intermediate 2 qualifications at C or above
  • Four National 5 qualifications including English at C or above

Internal Candidates

  • Complete Pre-access to Nursing/Introduction to Childcare/NC Child, Health and Social Care with 12 assessed credits including

Maths/Numeracy, IT and Communication at Intermediate 2

  • Relevant work experience within the Care sector alternative equivalent qualifications will be considered on an individual basis

In addition both Internal and External Students must also be accepted as a PVG scheme member through the College system. Placements cannot be started without this (see Disclosure Scotland for more information about the Protection of Vulnerable Groups).

  • SVQ Level 3 Social Services (Children and Young People)
  • HNC Additional Support Needs: Supporting the Individual

This Level 2 SVQ is accepted for registration with the SSSC at support worker level for those working with children and young people.

You will be required to:

  • Attend an interview and undertake a written exercise
  • Provide a personal statement submitted along with application form
  • Provide a reference at interview
  • You must also be accepted as a PVG scheme member through the College system. Placements cannot be started without this (see the Disclosure Scotland website for more information about the Protection of Vulnerable Groups)
